Alignment is the set of organizing principles which define and enforce the consistent behavior of that universe. There are three organizing principles around which most universes align:
- Amplified physics (incredible materials and energy sources, time machines, faster-than-light travel) prevails in about one third of extant universes.
- Quantum physics (semiconductors, electron microscopes, nuclear weapons) prevails in about one third of extant universes.
- Semantic physics (magic, faith, homeopathy) prevails in about one third of extant universes.
Approximately two thirds of extant universes are aligned with more than one principle. In most of these universes, one principle dominates, and the influence of any others is weak or inconsistent. It is rare for a universe to be strongly aligned with multiple principles.
Absent the influence of one or more of these organizing principles, Newtonian physics applies. Newtonian physics works in every known universe. However, it is rare for a universe to be unaligned with any organizing principle, or for it to be aligned with an organizing principle other than amplified physics, quantum physics, or semantic physics.
Approximately three quarters of extant universes are habitable. Although the physical constants of each universe will vary slightly from one to the next, the range of values which allow a stable universe are quite narrow, and the range that allows habitability is even narrower. The differences are usually too subtle for unaided perception.
